A Hidden Paradise in the Heart of the Mediterranean

Imagine a scene where the blue of the sea blends with the sky, where imposing cliffs embrace small coves of white sand dotted with pink pebbles. This is the spectacle that awaits those who arrive at Cala Mariolu, one of the most precious gems of the Gulf of Orosei, on the east coast of Sardinia. This piece of paradise, accessible only by boat or challenging trails, remains untouched, preserving its wild essence and exclusive atmosphere.

The Name and the Legend

The origin of the name “Cala Mariolu” is shrouded in a curious story. Local fishermen called it “ispuligi de nie,” which in Sardinian dialect means “snow fleas,” referring to the small, smooth, snow-white pebbles. However, Neapolitan fishermen who arrived in the region began calling it “Mariolu” (thief, in Neapolitan), as they said the monk seals that once inhabited the area stole fish from their nets. Today, the monk seal is no longer seen here, but Cala Mariolu retains its wild and untamed spirit.

What to Expect from the Experience

Visiting Cala Mariolu is like diving into a Mediterranean dream. The sea has shades ranging from turquoise to emerald, a spectacle that intensifies as the sunlight dances on the crystal-clear waters. The transparency of the sea reveals a seabed teeming with life, making this spot one of the best for snorkeling in Sardinia. The sensation of swimming among colorful schools of fish and exploring small underwater caves is simply unforgettable.

The beach itself is a mix of light sand and small white and pink pebbles, which contrast beautifully with the blue of the sea. The surrounding limestone cliffs offer natural shade at certain times of the day, creating perfect little refuges for relaxation.

How to Get to Cala Mariolu

Located in a hard-to-reach area, Cala Mariolu maintains its exclusive and preserved charm. There are two main ways to get there:
By boat: The most common and practical way. Departing from ports like Cala Gonone, Arbatax, or Santa Maria Navarrese, there are various boat tour options that include Cala Mariolu in their itinerary. Some boats allow you to disembark and spend a few hours on the beach. You can opt for organized tours, which run daily from May to September, or rent a private boat (with or without a skipper).

  • Departing from Cala Gonone, the trip takes about 40 minutes and offers incredible views of the Gulf of Orosei coastline.
  • Another option is to depart from Santa Maria Navarrese, with trips lasting approximately 2 hours.

By trail (trekking): For adventurers, there is a trail that starts in the town of Baunei. The hike requires good physical preparation, as it involves significant elevation changes and steep terrain, but the reward is a breathtaking view at the end of the trail.

What to Do at Cala Mariolu

Snorkeling and diving: The crystal-clear waters offer incredible visibility, making this spot perfect for exploring the rich marine life.
Exploring the caves: Small natural caves carved by the waves can be visited, providing a fascinating setting for photos and moments of contemplation.
Absolute relaxation: The beach invites you to unwind, whether by enjoying the shade of the cliffs or simply lying in the sun to soak up the Mediterranean energy.
