Sestriere is not just a ski resort. For me, it is a journey back in time. A vivid reminder of moments spent with family, of laughter and challenges on the ski slopes, of winters that seemed to last forever. I remember when I was a child, and my father would take me skiing in Sestriere, nestled in the heart of the Italian Alps.
The History of Sestriere: More Than Just Ski Slopes
Sestriere is a place with a history that goes beyond its modern ski facilities. Founded in the 1930s, this small alpine village quickly became an icon of winter sports. Its strategic location and spectacular views attracted the first mountain explorers. But it was with the 2006 Winter Olympics that Sestriere established itself as one of the world’s top ski destinations, becoming part of the renowned Via Lattea region, which extends into France.
The name “Sestriere” has an interesting origin: it comes from Petra Sextreria, the sixth stone used as a trigonometric point to measure the distance between Turin and other areas. This connection to precision and regional mapping dates back to its official founding in 1934 by the King of Italy. The town emerged from the land of other small villages, like Champlas du Col and Borgata, which came together to form a major winter tourist hub.
Childhood Memories: The Hotels and the Magic of Sestriere
Sestriere has a magical atmosphere that will never fade. I visited the Hotel Duchi d’Aosta many times, an iconic building with its circular ramp that seemed to lead directly into the clouds. The architecture of the tower, with its floors seemingly floating, was an adventure in itself. Climbing that gentle ramp to the top felt like walking through a work of art.
The Duchi d’Aosta has its own story, being one of the first grand hotels in town, welcoming guests from around the world. This hotel, along with others like La Torre and Principi di Piemonte, helped establish Sestriere as a destination of luxury and hospitality. These hotels were not just places to sleep; they were part of the Sestriere experience, where stories intertwined with winter dreams.
I also remember the heated pool at Principi di Piemonte, where, after a full day of skiing, one could relax in the warm waters with a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. For those who grew up there, these hotels hold priceless memories, forming the very essence of the Sestriere experience.
Adventures and Challenges in the Mountains
And, of course, the ski slopes. Ah, how could I forget La Motta? One of the most challenging slopes, which seemed like a real nightmare to me. The constant fog and high-altitude ice made every descent a test of courage. My father would take me on this slope every year, and I, terrified, would go down with him, not knowing what awaited me. But, at the same time, there were other slopes that were pure fun. The intermediate slopes, with soft snow and icy wind, were my favorites. I loved the adrenaline rush of speed and the feeling of freedom that only the Alps can offer.
Gastronomy: Flavors That Warm the Heart
How could I not mention Sestriere’s gastronomy? When I was a child, the crêpe chalet at the base of the slopes was a true comfort after a long day in the mountains. There was nothing better than enjoying a warm Grand Marnier crêpe with my father as we rested, watching people ski down the slopes.
Today, local restaurants maintain the Piedmontese tradition, offering dishes that warm the soul, like creamy polenta, cheese fondue, and truffle-based specialties. There’s nothing more comforting than sitting at a cozy table, enjoying a delicious meal, and reliving the memories of a perfect winter.
Sestriere Today: The Soul of the Mountains
Looking at Sestriere today, it’s impossible not to feel nostalgic for those times while noticing that the charm of the place remains untouched. The town may have evolved, but the energy that flows through its streets and ski slopes is the same as when I was a child. The hotels still offer the same comfort, the slopes continue to challenge skiers, and the feeling of being at home, among the mountains, has remained unchanged.
Today, Sestriere stands as the highest municipality in Italy, with an altitude of 2,035 meters, surrounded by peaks that exceed 3,000 meters. Besides being a paradise for skiers, the town also offers summer activities like hiking, mountain biking, rafting, and even golf, with its 18-hole course, the highest in Europe.
Monuments and Landmarks
Sestriere is rich in history and culture. One of its landmarks is the Church of Sant’Edoardo, designed by Giovanni Agnelli in memory of his father, who died in a plane crash. The church, with its pseudo-Romanesque style, is a true work of art, featuring beautiful bronze details and sculptures that reflect religious tradition.
Another point of interest is the obelisk that marks the route built by Napoleon to connect Piedmont to Haute-Savoie. Although it was destroyed, it was rebuilt in 1987 and has become a symbol of the region.
Ski Slopes: Adventures and Challenges in the Mountains
Sestriere is part of the Vialattea ski area, an international network of ski resorts that includes seven other mountain locations, all connected by modern cable cars and chairlifts. The locations of Sauze d’Oulx, Oulx, Sansicario, Cesana, Pragelato, Claviere, and the French station of Montgenèvre form a vast ski area offering over 249 slopes, with options for all skill levels.
The slopes are categorized into 7 green (easy), 80 blue (intermediate), 120 red (advanced), and 42 black (for expert skiers), with 70 ski lifts spread across the region. For families, there are also Baby Fun Parks in Sansicario and Sauze d’Oulx, designed for children to have fun while beginning to explore skiing.
Additionally, visitors have access to a wide network of over 800 ski and snowboard instructors distributed across the 14 local schools. For those looking for more than just downhill skiing, there are over 30 mountain lodges where you can relax, enjoy a traditional meal, or sip a glass of wine with a breathtaking view.
Whether you’re seeking adventure on the slopes or relaxation in the mountain lodges, the Via Lattea offers an unparalleled skiing experience, with something for every taste.
